Home New Introductions 2006 Vines 2006 Strawberry Lemonade® Variegated Mandevilla

Strawberry Lemonade® Variegated Mandevilla
Mandevilla sanderi 'MonProud' PPAF

This new Mandevilla has one of the most interesting variegations we have seen - it is extremely stable and has at least four distinct colors: mint green, cream and white, all flushed with pink when the foliage emerges. It produces a profusion of deep pink funnel- shaped flowers with bright yellow throats. This low-growing, shrub- like vine provides year- round color, kept as a shrub or climbing on a low trellis.

Moderate grower, reaching six to eight feet long. Evergreen. Full to partial sun Discovered as a branch sport of the Red Riding Hood Mandevilla by Andy Proud, Propagation Coach at the Azusa, California nursery.

The queen of tropical vines is smaller with this variegaed cultivar that’s perfect plant to espalier onto creative flat trellage fixed to wall or fence. With pruning it takes on a more shrubby form that is best suited to mixed tropical borders and foundation planting. A superior potted plant that may be brought indoors for winter. Place containers against a vertical surface to grow up, or on an elevated surface where it is free to drape or hang in flower covered tresses. Excellent choice for big changes in small courtyards.

This beauty deserves to be combined with the best semitropical plants such as Crown of Bohemia Tropical Hibiscus, (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis ‘Crown of Bohemia’), Magnificent Brunfelsia, (Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Magnifica’), Bird of Paradise, (Strelitzia reginae) and Kaffir Lily, (Clivia miniata ‘French Hybrid’). Use Mandevilla with fragrant plants such as Everblooming Gardenia, (Gardenia jasminoides ‘Veitchii’), Tuttle’s Natal Plum, (Carissa macrocarpa ‘Tuttle’) and accent with Tri-Color Society Garlic, (Tulbaghia violacea ‘Tricolor’).

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer. Provide support such as a trellis or arbor. Prune annually to control size.

Deep pink flowers spring until frost.

Low growing, shrub-like vine, moderate growing, stems to 6 to 8 ft. long.

Water regularly, when top 3 in. of soil is dry.

Full to partial sun.
