Home New Introductions 2006 Shrubs 2006 Petite Butterflies™ Sweet Pea Shrub

Petite Butterflies Sweet Pea Shrub
Polygala fruticosa 'Petite Butterflies'

Polygalas are wonderful flowering evergreen shrubs from South Africa that are just beginning to get the attention they deserve. This repeat bloomer provides continuous accent color. It produces masses of vibrant purple and magenta flowers throughout the year.

Petite Butterflies is a compact variety with very dense foliage that will grow to about three to four feet high and wide. Its narrow, one- inch heart- shape foliage is a mid green. This variety is moderately frost tolerant and will tolerate some wind. Blooms best in filtered sun.

Superior shrub for foundation planting under windows or at entry and porch. Blooming plants are bright enough to provide a more long range focal point. Essential to the shrub border but also works well in the back of perennial borders for mass. Makes a good accent for softening corners and framing art and other focal points. Great choice for romantic cottage garden compositions and causal country gardens along picket fences or rails.

Use this shrub with other quaint cottage garden favorites: Moonshadow Butterfly Bush, (Buddleika davidii’ Moonshadow’), Petite Pink Crape Myrtle, (Lagerstroemia indica ‘Petite Pinke’) and Pink Pearl Bougainvillea, (Bougainvillea ‘Abearl’). Group with high profile perennials: Midknight Blue Agapanthus, (Agapanthus x ‘Monmid’), Evening Glow New Zealand Flax, (Phormium x ‘ Evening Glow’), Tropicanna Canna, (Canna indica ‘Phaison’).

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after establishment. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Purplish-magenta flowers spring through summer.
